NETWORK PRESENCE SENSING TECHNOLOGY SUITE

Network Presence Sensing (NPS) technology is a patented set of custom firmware and software packages that turn our partners’ IoT devices into advanced occupancy sensing systems without adding to or changing their hardware. NPS technology allows commercially available wireless communication systems to derive information about human presence or absence in a detection area using network diagnostic data.

 

Some call it a “sensorless” sensor because it doesn’t use any new sensor hardware. In reality, we simply leverage human interaction with the RF environment to provide our partners with presence information to enable autonomous lighting control, advanced security, optimized HVAC, and more.

We refer to the area bounded by a set of nodes as a detection area. NPS uses three or more nodes to define this detection area. Network diagnostic information is collected through communication between those devices and analyzed to make determinations about human presence in the detection area.

 

When humans are present in a physical space, they impact the RF environment in ways which are detectable in the network diagnostic information using NPS algorithms. The NPS technology suite also includes sets of communication patterns to provide desired user experiences across a variety of platforms.

HOW IT WORKS

Network Presence Sensing uses an emergent system behavior of wireless communications to detect the presence of humans. When devices communicate with each other, their wireless transmissions interact with the environment as they propagate through space. The radios provide network diagnostic information to aid network formation and diagnose communications issues. Ivani’s NPS technology analyzes this data to derive human presence in a detection area.

Change Detection

Change Detection can replicate the performance of current motion sensing hardware (often found in security hardware or commercial lighting controls) with distinct cost and performance advantages. Unlike most motion sensors on the market today, Change Detection fills the entire room and does not require line of site to detect human motion.

Change+

Encompassing all features of Change Detection, Change+ provides an elevated user experience when a person leaves the detection space. When the NPS system builds confidence that a room has returned to its previous state before a change was detected, it declares absence significantly faster than the typical motion detector timer, usually within 30 seconds of leaving the detection area.

Presence Detection is true occupancy sensing. Most companies call motion sensors “occupancy sensors” when they only sense motion. Presence Detection is different because it determines the presence or absence of people in a space. A person can remain motionless in a space for as long as they want and the system will remember their presence. Once they leave the space, NPS recognizes the lack of human presence and declares absence. This information can then be used by our partners for a variety of purposes.

People Counting

People Counting builds on the Presence Detection functionality by determining the amount of people within a detection area at a given time. Ivani works with its partners to determine the particular counting information desired for a given application, and can provide solutions tailored to those particular requirements.

People Locating

People Locating leverages Presence Detection and People Counting to locate people in a space without the use of a fiducial element (cell phone or tag) on each person. Requiring extensive computational power, this is the highest functionality of the NPS technology suite.
